Gnucash for Android second alpha build

Posted on Friday, July 27, 2012 in Coding

It has been almost 3 weeks since the initial alpha release of Gnucash for Android. In the meantime, a lot has changed for the better both functionally and architecturally. Today I am announcing the second alpha build of Gnucash for Android. First, the usual disclaimer:

**Disclaimer**: This software is meant for testing purpose only…… yada yada yada

You know the drill. If you still want to read it, the full disclaimer and the installation instructions are available in the announcement of the first alpha release.

Now, how to get the app? For those who have cloned the repo, you can just pull the latest commits from the master branch. For everyone else, the compiled apk is available from Github. Or you can scan the QR code below to get it directly on your phone.

So what is new since the last alpha? Quite a lot, but here are the highlights.

  • Fixed bug causing crashes and amount formatting errors when creating new transactions
  • Implemented bulk moving of transactions between accounts.
  • Support for multiple currencies
  • Homescreen widget for quick account overview and adding transactions
  • Third-party applications can now record transactions in Gnucash for Android through Intents, restricted by permissions (more on that in another blog post)
  • On first run, users will be prompted to create some default accounts
  • Exported OFX files are now located in a folder named “gnucash” on the SD card
  • Lots of small bug fixes

But it will not be called an alpha build if it did not still have issues. Some of the main known issues right now are:

  • If you have multiple widgets, they all only create transactions in the first account which was created on that device. When done right, each widget should create its transactions in its own linked account.
  • ‘About’ view in settings not implemented (it’s empty right now)
  • Home button does not work in Transactions activity

So there you go. I’m sure there are other issues which you will tell me about. You can send me a mail, or open a new issue on Github. I am looking forward to your feedback.

Just as a warning for others’ the signatures are different you need to uninstall the old one first.
